Them?

Written by Seriah Azkath

She awoke. There was something that she was failing to remember... It was a nagging feeling. It was something important. She crawled out of bed, still groggy. Stumbling, half-awake, towards the door, a feeling of dread begins to engulf her... Emerging into the living room, only slightly more coherent, she sees her Uncle standing by the window. He turns, smiles, and greets her. To her surprise, she finds herself fearing him. Something isn't right. A sense of repulsion is rising... She starts to move towards the front door, and he moves to block her path. Still smiling. They struggle. He tries, in vain, to convince her that she should stay right there with him... Where it's safe. She forces her way past him and stumbles out onto the front lawn. A neatly cut, suburban lawn. Her mental haze begins to clear. She begins to recall what's been happening... They almost had her! She runs to her car, which still sits nearby, right where she left it. The transmitter lay, yet undisturbed, on the passenger seat. They must know what she planned to do. Couldn't they have stopped her? Why didn't they? She tries to start the car... Fails. Interference from Them... She tunes and activates the transmitter. She can feel the energy field it creates... She can sense their surprise! She starts the car. She could have escaped then...  She drives up the lane towards the courtyard. They are there. She can sense their confusion. She'll go right to their heart... She tries to hold her focus, but even through the energy field, they're drawing out her mind... Visions and emotions flood... Memories... Tearing... The car stalls. Too much... Reality slipping... All a single mote... An infinite point... She reaches over and retunes the transmitter. The sheer force of her Will stuns them. They then turn off the transmitter. They proceed to draw out the chords of her very soul... Her defenses fall away quickly. Still, she tries to fight it... Too much... She hates Them. They can't do this to her!! And then, acquiescence.

Nothingness...

A tiny room. Bright. A small man stands before her. She has no presence. He speaks without speaking... "Is this what you wanted? It is what you have been searching for..." His movements are quick and insect-like. His large eyes, a deep black abyss... Those eyes are all. She can see nothing else. She drinks them in... A last few fleeting thoughts... "Is this all there is? Tired now... Maybe it was better not to know? Doesn't matter now. Nothing does. And that's alright. That's just fine. This is my last regress..."
